Landscape ocean jasper set in fine silver. A seafoam green Oregon sunstone sits at the top as an accent. Handmade fine silver setting with handmade sterling silver chain. Chain is 16" and adjustable to 18" with a lobster claw clasp.
One of a kind!
Ocean Jasper is a gem material, identified by a unique pattern of eyes, or "orbs" on a swirling, striped background of vibrant color. It often includes vugs lined with white or green druzy quartz crystals. It is found in only one place in the world: along the northeast coast of Madagascar.
A stunning example of Fordite set in a layered fine silver setting. The back layer of silver has been carved into an abstract design to mimic the design in the Fordite. A dainty garnet cabachon accentuates the pendant. Patina has been selectively added to the silver to bring out details A small area has been left open on the back so the wearer can see the back side of the Fordite, which is just as interesting as the front.
Chain is handmade in sterling silver with some random links having small silver granules added to the rings. The closure is a sterling silver lobster claw clasp - very secure and gives the wearer a lot of options regarding length. This necklace is 16" but adjustable to 18". I can adjust the length, please ask!
This is a one of a kind piece.
About Fordite: Solid Fordite cabochon, known locally as Detroit Agate, is not an agate at all, tbut merely a happy accident! The original material was created many years ago at the Ford Rouge Plant just outside of Detroit, Michigan. Layer upon layer, paint over-spray built up on metal racks that transported new car bodies through the paint shop, and into the oven, where each coat was baked hard. This material has been turned into cabachons for over 25 years in all of its incarnations, from the mostly black and brown enamels of the late 1940's, to the colorful lacquers of the 1960's, right up to the vibrant base coats of the late 1980's when just a few factories still painted in the old way. Genuine Fordite is increasingly rare because modern factories don't produce the over-spray of the old days.
